Labrador City Native's Olympic Volunteer Experience
LabradorCity native Chris Etsell started snowboarding on SmokeyMountain in 1991 and was selected as a volunteer for the Olympic Half Pipe Competition. He and his wife now reside in Vancouver where Chris is a helicopter rappel firefighter with the B.C. Ministry of Forests.
Chris says of his Olympic experience, “What an unbelievable time! Between the competitors practice runs, my crew and I would do a quick slip through the bottom of the pipe to help smooth out any ruts created by the riders. It was after one of these runs that I got to the bottom of the lift and realised that I was about to get on a chair with SHAUN WHITE! We proceeded to have a great conversation about Vancouver and the condition of the halfpipe that day. Seeing all of these amazing riders was definitely a time I will never forget, but being there for Shaun White’s and Torah Bright’s gold medal runs was truly something that I am very proud of.”
