Winter

Labrador West offers many enjoyable activities throughout the winter months (November - April).   The average annual snowfall is 366 cm (12 feet). January and February are the coldest months of the year with temperatures averaging an exhilarating -30 degrees Celsius.

With cold temperatures come clear skies -- prime conditions for viewing the magnificent Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights in all their majesty.

In December, residents and businesses participate in the Winter Lights Celebrations. With lots of lights, beautiful snow sculptures, seasonal events organized by community groups and volunteers, the young and young at heart enjoy the season and a community that they are proud to call home.

In March temperatures begin to warm and residents and visitors alike take part in a variety of exciting activities including Winter Carnival - a week long festival of family activities.

Situated in the scenic Wapusakatta Mountains, 5 km from Labrador City, the Smokey Mountain Ski Club provides beginner, intermediate and advanced alpine skiers and snowboarders 19 groomed runs, a 1,000 ft vertical, on all natural snow.   Facilities include a snowboard park, double chair, three pommel lifts, base lodge, ski /  snowboard rentals and lessons, canteen & bar services.

The Menihek Nordic Ski Club is a high performance training centre for Canadian national, provincial, divisional and international teams.  With over 34 km of groomed trails, the Menihek trails cater to skiers of every skill level.  Amenities include night skiing on the popular "401" trail, rest cabins, ski rentals, canteen and bar service, catering, biathlon range and a log chalet for seminars, socials and meetings.  Each year Menihek hosts the Great Labrador Loppet. Individuals both young and old compete or just enjoy a day of skiing over groomed 10 km, 27 km and 54 km trails.

The White Wolf Snowmobile Club  provides local and visiting snowmobile enthusiasts access to over 450 km of groomed snowmobile trails and thousands of kilometers of off-trail riding.  Explore Labrador West on some of the best groomed snowmobile trails in the world through Labrador's unique, exciting wilderness. An integral part of the Labrador Winter Trails network, Labrador boasts over 1500 km of groomed trails connecting many Labrador communities.  For the more adventurous snowmobiler, take up the Cain's Quest challenge; a  2500+ km endurance snowmobile race hosted in March.

Spectacular scenery and outdoor adventure is only surpassed by the witnessing the annual migration of the George River Caribou Herd.
