The Iron Ore Company (IOC) has been mining its own dolomite for making fluxed pellets in Labrador West since 1986. Production from the Leila Wynne quarry north of Wabush started in 1992. In 2005, shipments were 175,000 tonnes. This quarry is expected to close in 2006 after which the company plans to open the Plateau dolomite quarry which was released from Environmental Assessment on July 9, 2005.
The 300,000 tonnes of dolomite currently needed per year is projected to increase to 400,000 tonnes over the 20-year life of the quarry. IOC intends to develop the quarry in stages commencing as early as late Q2, 2006 with the salvaging of timber and stripping of overburden. Drilling and blasting is planned for Q3, 2006, and quarrying at the new site is projected to commence in 2007.
