Community Beautification and Enhancement
Over the last number of years the Town of Labrador City has been involved in improving its properties and encouraging its citizens and businesses to do the same. The Town has always prided itself in having first rate parks and properties and we are continually striving to improve each year. In 1998 the Town entered a provincial competition called "Tidy Towns" where your community is rated by outside judges. This program evaluates your community in the areas of turf management, urban forestry, business involvement, municipal properties, and private properties. The judges provide feedback on what we are doing well and areas where we need improvement. This has been a tremendous help as we move forward and with our plans and act upon some of the judge's recommendations.
In 2001 Council developed a new committee called Community Beautification & Enhancement comprised of a member of Council, Town Staff and members of the community who work on developing and implementing a four year plan. This new Committee shows Council commitment to the program and one of the goals of Council and the Committee is to improve its own facilities and lead by example. The rewards have been unbelievable and the Town continues to improve year after year.
The information on the website is one of the ways we hope to improve our efforts and communicate information to the public. We are hoping to educate the citizens and provide them with information on the cultivation and propagation of plants, trees, shrubs, etc. The website provides information on species that will and can grow in our region along with maintenance tips for lawn care, tree pruning, and proper fertilization techniques, etc. We have provided information on the species that we plant at our own property on a yearly basis and we hope that helps you in the development of your own property.
We hope you find the information valuable and useful for your own properties. If you have any comments or feedback please feel free to call the Recreation Department at 944-3602 or e-mail at recreation@labcity.nf.ca.
